What’s the first thing you think of when you think about LinkedIn? Stuffy social media platform? Don’t know where to start? Don’t know what to share? Is it the right place for me and my business? Recruiting platform?
LinkedIn has changed a lot since its inception in 2003. While it used to be a platform mainly used for screening and recruiting, it’s now become a platform of shared knowledge and building community.
LinkedIn is the most underutilized social media platform, and if you own a business, it’s THE BEST for you to show up as a content creator.
There are over 875 million users with over 58 million registered companies.
Most of LinkedIn’s revenue comes from subscriptions. When someone pays for a subscription to utilize the LinkedIn platform, they’ll find more value in it compared to platforms where the main revenue stream is from ad-spend.
FUN FACT: According to siteefy.com, we see an average of 10,000 daily ads! We are inundated with ads.
Entrepreneurs have an innate sense of curiosity and want to learn how to move forward faster. LinkedIn’s mission is to “Connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful.”
Content Creation on LinkedIn
Sharing knowledge is key.
Share your origin story. How did you go from start-up to success? People want to know. This will help them move forward faster.
Share helpful tips and tricks based on your unique skillset.
Share things that you’re working on right now.
Spark conversations by sharing things that you’ve learned through the journey of being you.
Share about things you want to do.
Show how you bring value to the space you invite people into. The more you’re willing to help others, the more apt they will be to help you.
Ask people to come along with the movement that you’re creating. What’s your main message?
Bottom line: BE YOURSELF.
LinkedIn really is a platform for building true community. Just be you. You are your brand. You are your business. The more authentic and real you are, the more attractive you are to your ideal clients.
- Create content using your authentic voice. Don’t try to speak or write like someone else. Use the same voice you’d use when talking to a friend.
- Dress how you dress. If you wear T-shirts and jeans daily, show up on LinkedIn in T-shirts and jeans. Think Gary Vaynerchuk and Dean Gaziosi.
- Don’t be shy when sharing your brand message, especially if you feel it goes against the grain in your industry. Be courageous and bold. People are looking for something different.
- Share the uniqueness of you and your business. This is called brand differentiation. Use it to your advantage.
Keep your posts short and sweet. Say what you say in an effective and efficient way.
LinkedIn recommends posting once or twice daily. This will most likely seem completely overwhelming at first. I recommend using a scheduling system like Later.com to help you save time. Set aside a few hours each Sunday to schedule your content for the upcoming week.
Use beautiful imagery. Schedule a photo shoot for yourself and use stock images as needed. Pexels, Unsplash, and Canva Pro are excellent resources for free stock photography.
Be patient.
Content creation is a long game. Don’t give up if you’re only getting a few likes. Keep going. You’ll gain trust over time. People will begin to see you as an expert in your field, look forward to your posts, share more often, and happily join in on the conversation.
